There are two parts to the movie corner: (1) the column, and (2) the reviews. The column deals with issues or topics about "cinema-going" in today's world. It's me doing what I do best...talk! You can take it or leave it if you like.

In the reviews, I basically suggest movies that people may have missed but deserve an audience. I take it very personally everytime someone misses a good movie. So, if I end up bringing some enjoyment to someone's evening in suggesting these unkonwn or forgotten titles, then I can sleep at night.

MOVIE CORNER #4 (May 06)     column      reviews  elizabethtown

So, if recent attendance at theaters are any indication, looks like home video is now everyone's choice for how to properly watch a movie. And it's funny that for the first time since I started this column, you can now see (or WILL be able to see) 99% of the films on my list by hopping over to a Blockbuster or Hollywood video store (instead of hunting them down online with Netflix or Blockbuster.com as "obscure choices"). That being said, I guess I'm still trying to deal with the fact that for some of you, the local grocery store has become your best and only line of defense against being a jaded movie-goer. Too bad for you, the beautiful black n white photography in "Good Night and Good Luck" just won't be the same on even the best of Hi-Def Televisions.

Speaking of which, do all of you with HDTVs have your aspect ratio set right? Or are you still watching movies "stretched" out so that even Nicole Kidman looks a bit wide? (It's things like this that makes me feel that people don't really care out how a projected film negative just looks better than your TV.

Whups...I almost tripped coming down from my soap box...whew.

Anyways, unlike the media, I really want you to try out my humble list of films and see for yourself how bad of a year 2005 WASN'T for movies. At least, you just might gain respect for the fact that today's movies aren't all remakes and sequels without a shred of originality. Hmmm, well...I take that back. At least AWAY FROM HOLLYWOOD they aren't (see all past columns below).
 8-)

Okay, on with the show! Click "Column" or "Reviews" above. And, for this Corner's NEGATIVE review, we have "ELIZABETHTOWN"!

MOVIE CORNER #3 (July 05)     column      reviews  war of the worlds

Well, hello everyone! It's been a while since I've written again. But something happened last night that compelled me to revisit my movie corner right away. I saw War of the Worlds. And I did NOT like it. I thought it was a sham and a fake, and I'll definitely go into my reasons in my review. So this movie corner has something new: a negative review. Because of my supreme disappointment at Spielberg's latest, I couldn't help but get my feelings out. It was one of the BIG movies I was waiting for this summer. I just achingly wanted to see this work. While Batman Begins remains the best film I've seen this year, that was also something very very personal for me (having designed their logo) and my experience with that film is somewhat biased. However, War of the Worlds also had a special place for me because as a kid, the 1953 version of the movie was one of my first movie "experiences" ever. It affected me at a young age and infected me with the desire to make movies. Again, I'll go into all that in my review.

As always, I do have a handful of movies that I would like to tell you...no, URGE you, to go see or rent. There are small films, big films, and films a little older that you can rent tonight! Also, in keeping with tradition, I have my movie column that comments on some aspect or issue of moviegoing in today's world. This time around, I'm talking about how every single one of us will bring about "The Extinction of Good Mainstream Movies".

Okay, on with the show!

MOVIE CORNER #2 (Oct 04)     column      reviews

Hello All! I've finally written a follow-up! I'd like to begin by telling you about one of my own funny movie-going habits. When I walk out of a theater, I try to come up with one word or phrase as soon as I'm outside. Just one word or phrase (if I can) that characterizes the movie for me. Or at least, the first word or phrase that flashes in my mind. It's not what many other people would think, but then, they're not writing these reviews, are they? So, of the films below that I saw in a theater, I will start out with the one word or phrase (and I'll bold it in caps and make it green).

You'll notice that this time, I've included a few more older films (we can't forget the old gems now, can we). And especially since my third film is a sequel, I had to put in the original film from 10 years before.

Okay, on with the show!

MOVIE CORNER #1 (July 04)     column      reviews
Okay, this whole Movie Corner thing came out of recent discussions at my workplace with folks who will remain anonymous (ahem...Jerry Pipes, Lisa Hagar, Theresa Griffith). Anyways, those discussions about movies (my favorite topic) have led me to put together this little column about movies.
